Overview
Screwby, the Cheerful Robot, was inspired by his pal Sprig. Because Sprig was so fun to make and needed a friend to keep him company, Screwby was created but with different parts. Screwby is another experiment testing the creativity of the owner as each of these scrap robots do. With his big round eyes made of rubber feet, he appears to have good vision and that really helps his curiosity.

Materials & Construction
Screwby is made from:
- Primary Materials: Scrap wood – leftover from a previous project
- Secondary Materials: Screws, nuts, fork terminals, rubber feet, metal staple
- Notable reused parts: Solid wire for the arms
Origin of the Name
Screwby got his name because of the various screws contained in his assembly and each one is visible and uniquely used. His original name was going to be Boltby but as his registry entry was being written, it was realized that he does not have a single bolt in his assembly so that name did not seem to properly fit. However, because of the numerous screws in his assembly, Screwby became his name instead.
Responsibilities
Screwby has taken on the following duties:
- Watching over the area he is at at the moment.
- Finding other “treasures” that might be useful.
- Keeping other scrap robots and people company.
Screwby’s Story
Screwby has always been a little different, but aren’t they all? Built from scraps, old screws, bent wire, and bits of unused hardware, he never quite understood why everyone expected him to have a purpose. Instead, Screwby decided his purpose was simply to enjoy life and observe everything around him. He loves sunny afternoons, watching people work, and collecting interesting bits of junk that he insists are “treasures.” He may not move, talk, or do much of anything, but Screwby is perfectly happy just standing around, quietly wondering what kind of trouble he might get into next.
Creator’s Notes
Screwby is the second scrap robot made in Rick’s Hobby Garage. Just like Sprig, he was a fun one to make. Watching these scrap robots come together without a real plan is exciting because you really don’t know where it is going to go. At the time of making Screwby, we did not have that many miscellaneous scrap parts around that we knew of because this was still just the beginning of this fun adventure in making scrap robots.
Scrummaging through various drawers of hardware, lag screws were decided for the legs because they had a larger flat head that could help balance him while he stood upright.
A wing nut on top of his head gives the look of an antenna. Soft rubber cutting board feet with the stainless steel screws that came with them made for nice eyes. An electrical metal staple looked good for the mouth. And the fork terminals that are used for electrical wire connections looked good for hands and came from inspiration of other scrap robots found online at various sources.

Location: Rick’s Hobby Garage
Screwby is currently hanging out with Sprig watching what everyone is doing. He isn’t doing much and has so far stayed out of trouble, probably thanks to Sprig.
As far as Screwby is concerned, someday somebody is going to need a robot just like him.
Rick Simper has various hobbies, including woodworking, metalworking, composting, and gardening. He is an Architect full time and uses these hobbies to get away from the busy week of Architecture.
