Hi! I am Joy, the other half of Rick’s Hobby Garage. This is my first blog, so bear with me. Let me introduce myself. I am a stay at home, homeschooling mom who enjoys gardening and making projects with Rick when the time allows.

Our kids have a fort/garden area that they spend every chance they get in. So, when our daughter, Ava, received this My Fairy Garden Unicorn Paradise (paid link) garden kit for her birthday, she was super excited.

She tore into the box and wanted to assemble her fairy garden at that moment. I was a little reserved about it because so many of these little garden kits really just don’t work out and leave everyone disappointed and frustrated. This garden kit  was different and ended with a happy gardener.

Once she opened the box, sadly a piece was missing. It was a major piece with no work around. Wanting to cheer up the birthday girl, I immediately snapped some photos and sent off an email to customer service. I can not recommend this company enough! They got back to me that day and shipped out a replacement and in a few days the birthday girl was back up and running with her fairy garden project.

First off, the soil did look a little funky and again I was worried that it would not work out. Once again with this project, I was wrong. We did make a mistake though. The soil was very, very dry. I mean the Sahara Desert dry. So when Ava dumped the soil right into the planter and got to work with the seeds, this left little wiggle room for this hydrophobic soil to accept the water. When Ava was finished planting her newly acquired seeds, she reached for the watering can and poured the water. It ran off the top of the soil like a slippy slide and landed all over the table. Thankfully we were working outside. After some gentle coaxing with a spray bottle and gentle pouring from the watering can, Ava was back in business with moist soil for her seeds.

So, my recommendation is do not follow what we did and instead pour the soil into a separate, bigger bowl and pre-moisten it before you add it to the fairy garden bowl. Reserve some soil to be sprinkled on top of the seeds. Then once the seeds are added, use the reserved soil to lightly cover the seeds. Lightly water or mist to help the soil adhere to the seeds.

This garden was planted in the spring (April) and was placed in a location where it received morning light and afternoon shade.

Since the seeds consisted of a variety of grasses and peas, Ava was treated to sprouts within a few days.

These are the sprouts after about 3 days:

And these are the sprouts after 5 days of growth:

We had her fairy garden set up on our picnic table outside near the back door and she proceeded to redecorate it pretty much every time she passed it.

I am pleasantly surprised at how well the fairy garden kit sprouted and how much fun she had with it. I would highly recommend this to any kiddo interested in gardening and decorating! This kit was purchased through Amazon and you can get yours here (paid link).
